Plan B: What to Do When Plan A Fails

Plan_A_Plan_B2I should be jumping up and down with joy right now. After all, my new book, AGILE SELLING, is coming out next week.

But instead of busily rolling out my well-planned book launch campaign, I’m sitting in a hospital room watching my husband sleep.

Ten days ago he had quadruple bypass surgery - which went well. I expected a quick recovery because he was healthy going into it, and built my plans around it.

Then complications set in. I immediately canceled everything; family is more important than a book. After a couple of scary days, the downhill spiral stopped. Thankfully, my husband is getting better little by little every day.

But even though I'm in the midst of a family crisis, the world doesn't stop. I can’t delay the book launch date; that’s set by the publisher months in advance. Plan A is totally shot.

What do you do when Plan A is no longer feasible?

It happens all the time – to all of us. And, when it does, you have to be agile, able to quickly adjust to changes when they happen.

Right now, I’m having to practice my own advice in real-time. (Believe me, the irony of it all does not fail to escape me.)

So here’s what Plan B looks like for me:

1. I’m just going to tell you about AGILE SELLING.

So here it is flat-out. Forget the rah-rah stuff.

It’s the most important book I’ve written.
It’s my gift to the world.
It’s the best I have to give you.

If you liked my other books, this one is even more helpful. It gets to the real foundation of sales success. Both new sellers and experienced pros will get good ideas from it.

I’d consider it a great honor if you’d buy AGILE SELLING. When you’re done reading it, I’d love to know which ideas resonate with you the most.

If you don’t find value in AGILE SELLING, I’ll personally refund your money.

2. I’m reaching out for help.

That’s a toughie for me. I like to be in control of things.

Many of my colleagues have stepped in to help me with the launch. I am deeply touched by their support and efforts on my behalf. My staff has been super too; they’ve gone the extra mile in my absence.

3. I’m keeping calm about it.

Things happen that are out of our control. In life. In sales.

Sometimes, I feel like I’m drowning (I even dreamt about that the other night), but then I remind myself that it’s not the end of the world.  It is simply a new challenge for me.

Damn. Being agile isn’t easy. But constant change is the new normal, and we have to figure out how to stay afloat - and even thrive - in this ever-evolving ecosystem.
