Quit walking around complaining about how your boss or management does not motivate you.

It’s not going to help, because let’s be clear — nobody can motivate you! Only you can motivate yourself.

The best anyone can do is create an environment for people to motivate themselves. If a person doesn’t want to be motivated, it’s not going to make a difference what they do. We can argue with somebody and demotivate a person, but that’s not the same as motivating.

It comes down to being part of a culture and an environment that allows you to motivate yourself. We motivate ourselves by having a sense of self-worth and satisfaction and a feeling that what we’re doing is making an impact.

If you’re a leader, are you creating an environment for your people to succeed? If you’re not valuing the contributions of your people and respecting them for who they are, then why should you ever expect them to do what you want them to do?  Motivated people accomplish things. It’s a basic truth.

If you’re reading this and you’re not a leader, but rather a salesperson, think about this in the context of your customers.  If we fail to do the same thing for our customers we expect our manager to do for us, then how will we expect our customers to do what we want them to do?

A positive culture creates value by increasing the level of participation from all parties by allowing people to be motivated.

Motivation is something that’s measured. It’s measured in both top-line sales and bottom-line profits.  It’s really quite simple. Motivation creates value and the lack of motivation destroys value.
