Attract The Right Job Or Clientele:

Do You Keep Up Appearances?

The question, ‘do you keep up appearances?’ may sound phony, but in fact, it relates to being current as much as possible. In addition to our everyday jobs and business meetings, we need to be attentive to what we portray online and in person.  Behind the effort is to know in our hearts and minds what our ultimate vision is and revisit it every day to make it achievable.

Old news merely contributes to yesterday’s memories; we should update as quickly as we are able. Today’s business matters are so complex that we do better when we admit what we don’t know and research what and who will assist us best. The possibilities are limitless and may include teamwork, a hired professional, or a subscription to software updates.

My Story

As I read business and news articles, I will consider how to improve what is already in place and possibly update older materials. For example, I will occasionally notice an intriguing email signature that motivates me to update mine. Casual conversations among friends and peers will give other indicators for what I may be overlooking. All the updates translate to my desire to keep up appearances.

It’s easy to give advice, but following up on it ourselves is a different matter. Realizing what needs to be in place, I’m going to great lengths to update everything I’ve ever written. It’s tedious and time-consuming. However, it also appears to be well worthwhile. I’m discovering broken links, entities out of business, and missing SEO techniques. It may take an entire year to fix everything I can do. For the strategies for which I am not familiar, I have assistance.

You may wonder whether the effort and cost are worthwhile. The answer is a resounding, ‘Yes!’ Almost immediately, the benefits materialized. It all goes towards building the brand, the branding effort, audience attraction, and incredible opportunities. None of the benefits would occur if I did not strive to keep up appearances.

Our collaborative effort has uniquely helped us build our audiences for business growth. The extra step I take is to share what I discover and attempt to implement with peers and team members. Likewise, they share with me their latest findings so that together we may move forward with more ease and greater visibility. The bonus is in the surprise offers that began to arrive and increased in frequency.

Your Story:
Do You Keep Up Appearances?

It isn’t easy producing the work you need to do while remaining current on new technology plus societal change and updating everything already complete and in place. Researching every new item can be time-consuming and overwhelming and prompt the idea of quitting. But leaving our work behind never solves anything. Instead, it will only bring further frustration with our life’s performance.

Quicker methods to keep up appearances include conversations with:

  • Your team
  • Experts in the field
  • Peers
  • Partners
  • Friends experiencing similar issues but who are also working to resolve them
  • New connections

Mediation or soul searching do well for coming to terms with what we may be putting off but recognize the need to begin. Whatever the realization may be, ensure you continue contributing to your long-term vision for how you want others to pique your passion further and remember your work. Without motivation to continue going, the effort becomes fruitless and wasted time.

Another benefit to continuing the work to keep up appearances and be current is that your brand speaks to many on multiple levels. When you can teach, motivate, and inspire others to do their best, they will reciprocate by providing referrals and potentially becoming your future client.

Upon recognizing what is working well for you, it may be time to join a new online group, create new products and services, or potentially consider creating a podcast or a webinar series.  The additional activities, service, and products add to your branding visibility and potential new opportunities.

The qualifier for everything is to ensure each endeavor works efficiently by itself and cohesively with the rest.  More importantly is that you enjoy each component; if not, delete it and attempt to replace with another.  It is the dedication to continued learning that differentiates the successful.  Not only will you be known as the one who keeps up appearances, but the one who surpasses most others.
