Attract the Right Job Or Clientele:

Will You Encourage Leadership to Contribute to Your Legacy?

The U.S. Labor Day Holiday is an excellent time to reflect on our thoughts. The compelling question is, ‘Will you encourage leadership to contribute to your legacy?’ Reviewing the past and current, plus considering the future, can help us establish better credentials for leadership and create a respectable legacy.

Living in Silicon Valley in the early days was a remarkable learning opportunity by hearing about and witnessing the fantastic, poor, and horrific experiences concerning leadership at varying companies.

My Story

While most past and present employees speak poorly of management, one person I know well is highly fortunate to have worked for and occasionally reminisces about a remarkable gentleman, Gene Amdahl, CEO of the Amdahl Corporation. The organization was created to compete with IBM.

Perseverance with Exemplary Leadership

Predictions were dire, but Gene Amdahl succeeded on many levels, including building an admirable legacy. The company was remarkable on many levels, particularly in encouraging new leadership among staff. Many enjoyed learning and advancing their careers; equally surprising is that they looked forward to their daily work. Following the leadership example, they turned around to assist and promote others under their guidance.

Celebrate!

What did the many long-term employees do after hearing the unwanted news about Amdahl retiring and selling the company in later years? They created a celebratory dinner party in honor of Gene Amdahl to thank him for all he did and wish him well in retirement. The remarkable moment came when they asked him to sit in a chair and lifted him to dance and cheer his highly esteemed work!

Nightmarish Work Follows

After the fact, the treatment people experienced in their new jobs became the opposite of celebratory as in horrific. Experiences included humiliation in front of teams, fabrication of facts, and outright lies. The stress became overwhelming, leaving little to celebrate.

Living in Silicon Valley in the early days was a remarkable learning opportunity by hearing about and witnessing the fantastic, poor, and horrific experiences concerning leadership at varying companies.

The Silicon Valley ‘Hunger Games’

The opposite of encouraging leadership among most occurred within another prominent organization. According to the CEO’s ideals, instead of cultivating the collaborative mindset, he took joy in creating an atmosphere akin to the movie, ‘The Hunger Games,’ embracing toxic synergy as stated in a Google Search.

The stories shared with me indicated that teams were pitted against one another to out-sell or out-perform each other. Accordingly, only 50% received praise followed by a bonus and could continue to work toward promotion. The other half were typically fired due to not winning the contest. As you can imagine, the turnover rate was second to none, creating much havoc among employees and their families. Highly talented people were fired solely due to losing a cut-throat game.

Your Story: Will You Encourage Leadership to Contribute to Your Legacy?

Monetary profit isn’t the only contributory factor for success. Client and employee satisfaction and loyalty are high on the score sheet. The type of loyalty Amdahl enjoyed became an inherent part of their branding and marketing that together encouraged long-term clients and employees, plus testimonials and referrals.

Whenever free time is available, it’s wise to reflect on what you wish ‘could have been’ and how you may improve the situation moving forward. Many people may tell you it’s useless or impossible, but it’s not valid should you be willing to realize the shortcomings and take action to fill in the blanks.

Upon realizing a new vision for your goal, work backward, setting progressive goals that will lead to your creative imagination. One essential element is to be vigilant daily in taking at minimum one baby step toward your ultimate goal and not allow anyone to dissuade you from doing so.

The next step is to share findings regarding achieving better outcomes with those reporting to you to encourage them further. Better yet, it is to volunteer community service and inspire them to take calculated risks upon envisioning what they desire. Assist people with setting and achieving their goals and teaching them how to land a leadership position. The appreciation will be enormous, business growth will likely take hold, and it will all contribute to your legacy.

In Conclusion: Will You Encourage Leadership to Contribute to Your Legacy?

Patiently training and sharing the best and the worst of what we learn, we teach others what to avoid and the best practices to instill for moving forward. Being the model upfront and then encouraging others to surpass us creates new passionate leaders desiring to be of service. Accordingly, when we foster leadership in others, we will contribute to our legacy for the better.
