Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

How Do You Rate Yourself Regarding Being Good?

Upon maturing, many allow others to disrupt their progress due to repeatedly hearing that they aren’t any good at what they are attempting to do. But as we age, some build more confidence to change their thinking. Often, ‘being good’ at something is a matter of Mind Over Matter.

One statement in the Washington Post, ‘The Steelers aren’t necessarily good. They just win.’ The statement proves the point of positive thinking and going for the win.

It matters not what others say or predict – what we choose to believe and how we go about it, in addition to pursuit, will differentiate our outcomes. As you read the insights below, consider ‘How do you rate yourself regarding being good?’ and whether change is in order.

My Story

There are two ways to approach negativity. You can either pay attention and stop your actions or muster up the courage to quietly say to yourself, ‘Just watch me!’ Perhaps that’s a part of the training that the Steelers undergo.

Business and sports have much in common. The main goal of winning is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Interference is merely a minor setback; sometimes, referees will put players on the sidelines during events that do not coincide with the rules.

Comparing Apples to Oranges

The sales profession is likened to the sports industry as the representatives experience numerous attempts to block their entry almost every time. Stamina is a requirement to be in sales.

Commonalities of Sports and Business:

  • Always keep the end goal with you.
  • Playbook strategies to avoid getting lost.
  • Defense and offense strategies to overcome obstacles.
  • Falling to rise again every time.
  • Always maintaining a positive mindset – aka – I can do it!
  • Teamwork

Open Mindset

The phrase, ‘comparing apples to oranges,’ sounds ridiculous to many. However, positive thinking and looking for those gold nuggets within each pursuit can bring a turning point for victory.

Accordingly, whether in business or sports, it’s necessary to keep an eye on the industry announcements and of the most formidable competitors to realize a strategy we may be missing. The next step is to test new theories, one at a time, to play a better game ultimately and create loyal fans that include clientele.

Diversity and Inclusion

More importantly, apples and oranges may differ in many ways but belong to the healthy fruit family. A creative analogy symbolizes inclusion when we accept the concept of combining apples and oranges vs. separation.

Utilizing the best we have singly and on teams requires listening for understanding when another expresses an unusual idea. Accordingly, by welcoming varying thoughts, it is more likely to hit a grand slam, be motivated to run the distance of a field for the final goal, or navigate through corporate obstacles to land in the C-suite and secure the sale.

Your Story: How Do You Rate Yourself Regarding Being Good?

When errors occur, it’s natural to beat oneself up mentally, but the better method is to reflect on ‘what just happened?’ By dissecting where we went wrong, it becomes easier to move past to build a new strategy. For salespeople, one new strategy may be to learn to become collaborative vs. secretive to earn the bonuses at stake. Corporations may want to rethink the individual monthly and year-end monetary gifts to offer team bonuses instead to encourage better teamwork.

Being good at an endeavor is a matter of definition; know that being perfect does not exist. There is always something that can use improvement, and jealousy will spark negative commentary that can raise doubt in ourselves when we allow it.

One of the better ways to rate yourself higher is to invest in the training you know you need. For example, if you find that meeting with executives is nerve-wracking, consider taking a public speaking class to boost your confidence. Continue studying in your private time and creatively thinking about your next steps. Then, test each idea as they come about to determine if it will work.

In Conclusion: How Do You Rate Yourself Regarding Being Good?

Rating yourself as exemplary is not about being the best; instead, the focus is your commitment to ongoing improvements. Anyone willing to invest the time and some money in improving their skills has the right mindset for becoming good at what they do.
