Attract the Right Job Or Clientele:

What Do You Do When Creativity Declines?

We can immediately halt as we ponder, ‘What do you do when creativity declines? Creativity is essential for almost any endeavor, even being a programmer, for example, or an engineer. Our commonality is the need to solve our problems; more often than not, creativity is typically the differentiator making the outcome successful.

My Story

For many, it’s typical to work alone, for the most part, to efficiently complete projects. But sometimes, doing the opposite is helpful to get ourselves back on track. I find taking breaks to be more social and in private time, arranging outings, or participating in other activities beneficial.

Using the opposite of our brains will help relieve stress about work and increase ideas for what’s to come next. As the ideas come forth, we feel a spark of enthusiasm. Typically, I weigh all sides to the new thought, including the pros and cons. If the outcome appears more beneficial than the downside, I waste no time proceeding. The enthusiasm encourages me to get back on track and continue what I most enjoy.

Present Humor Upfront

One of the benefits of sharing our stories and experiences with friends in a relaxing environment is that laughter breaks out, and suddenly new ideas hit. Laughter is an icebreaker plus a door opener as others listen, laugh, and realize how you may work together.

Unusual circumstances during my sales career encouraged my use of humor, which almost miraculously increased support, referrals, and ultimate sales.

Examples include:

– Negative individuals who succumb to laughter.

– Employees in the basement of a corporation cheered on the humor and then the business.

– Although management may not have enjoyed the sales team meetings, the staff certainly did!

Using humor relaxes the other person or people in the room. As laughter hits, they realize that we are not solely there to sell but to establish and build upon the relationship to earn it for the long term.

Using humor relaxes the other person or people in the room. As laughter hits, they realize that we are not solely there to sell but to establish and build upon the relationship to earn it for the long term. The humor also signifies that we give thought to the situations in front of us and can be creative in our approach to business.

One fond memory about using creativity to make a sale was when I presented at a meeting; only the Sales Manager was skeptical about my idea! Music and movies are always in mind as I apply the themes to business. A client was eager to purchase a larger printer in the day that would take up much office space. The Manager told everyone I was ridiculous because the area was too small.

My response was to use a line from the movie Field of Dreams. Kevin Costner said, ‘If you build it, they will come.’ Accordingly, I said, the new technology allows companies to move walls; we can do it. And given that you are short on sales reps making quota this month, I know you and the engineers will find the appropriate way to make it happen. The team laughed out loud as the Sales Manager turned beat red as the pressure was now on him. The team of engineers did move the walls and installed the enormous printer. In turn, it enabled me to perform well once again.

Your Story: What Do You Do When Creativity Declines?

The idea is to stimulate the brain so that new thought flows within. Usually, doing the opposite works well to begin using the other side of your brain. Upon seriously focusing on work, it can be helpful to get up to find a space for walking, running, exercising, singing, dancing, cooking, and painting. For those in a corporate environment, tapping another on the shoulder to ask for a private conversation and take it outside can work well.

Should the ideas sound unusual, consider the frustrating feeling when uncertain about the following steps. And then, realize how your mood will change when a touch of humor comes to mind, and from there, you begin to act upon it. Best for last, you may feel like a new person, one with a smile.

In Conclusion:  What Do You Do When Creativity Declines?

Regardless of our endeavors, when we set time aside to allow free thought to flow, embracing everything that has gone before, new ideas come to us. Allowing our experiences, ideas, and creative thinking to meld will enable us to create something new that can prove exciting to many. Not everyone will buy into a ‘ridiculous idea,’ but those who do may soon become regular collaborators and clients who enjoy working with our creative minds.
