Though there are similarities between the two, e-learning has a different set of benefits and challenges than those related to traditional learning. For example, keeping learners engaged has always been one of the primary challenges of education. However, this challenge is arguably more significant for e-learning courses where the trainer and trainee are not in the same physical space. 

 

One possible reason for these differences is that traditional learning has had literal centuries to develop its methods and strategies used to approach students. In contrast, e-learning has only been possible for just over a decade. Accordingly, many companies have forced third-party sources for innovations to help overcome these challenges. For instance, a training consultancy can give businesses expert advice and professional methods of training employees digitally.

Though e-learning’s remote setting contributes to one of its primary challenges, it is also responsible for many of its benefits. The scope of e-learning is one such example of these benefits. Lessons should energize learners early in the class and as often as reasonably possible. The more fun and intuitive a class is, the more likely the student will engage with the content. Learners will be more likely to remember the content of the lesson.

By having students interact personally with the content of a lesson, they are more likely to remain engaged. Engagement is key to a successful e-learning experience. 

?     G: Generate Meaning

Generate meaning by asking what students have learned and how it is relevant to them throughout the lesson. The more a learner recognizes a lesson’s content is applicable, the more likely the person is to engage with it. 

?     A: Apply Lessons to the Real World

Relate your hypothetical lessons to the real world. The best way to do this is to let learners practice it with mock situations similar to what they know or do. 

?     G: Gauge and Celebrate

Gauge the learners’ understanding of your lesson and celebrate their progress alongside them. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in education. 

?     E: Extend Learning into Action

Don’t just instruct your trainees, but also guide them through some tasks that are relevant to the content of your lessons.

Catering to your audience makes your lessons more engaging which will help your learners to remember better the content involved. There is no universally optimal duration for training modules or lessons. Strive to keep each lesson piece as short as possible while still touching on the critical areas and details. People only have so much mental energy that they can spend at once, and exceeding that is never beneficial.

Technology enables us to make modules interactive and visually appealing. It is essential to take advantage of this by providing engaging activities and visuals whenever possible. Instead of requiring your learners to read a load of information, try to find ways that you can show them.
