Realize Your Uniqueness

Ross’ Journey

“Ross, you are so resilient and persistent”… for quite a while now, this is what I have had my friends say to me. The truth is, I am just someone passionately following their purpose.

Yes, I was going to be an executive leadership coach. My purpose is to help develop managers into becoming good leaders. And my passion comes from seeing, throughout my years in corporate life, how much effect leaders have on people’s lives. For better or worse, it has an impact. The better the leader, the better an employee’s life will be.

When I began my coaching journey, the coach was a term more attributed to a football team than to business. But whatever the title, I was determined to help companies develop better. I was determined to enable enterprises to build better leaders in larger corporates or smaller entrepreneurial companies.

The reality of leaving the security of a senior management position, and the salary that went with it, didn’t seem too daunting. I just focused on following my dream, which had developed during twenty years of corporate life.

Yes, while I knew there were going to be many challenges ahead of me, I just believed deep down that it would happen, it felt right, and after all, it was my purpose—the essential part – a drive that came from the heart.

In reflection, while I set out to grow better leaders, the journey enabled my growth. The first lesson I had was how to deal with a roadblock. I would ask myself.:

“Is this blockage permanent and telling me that this destination is not meant for me, or is it something I just need to persist or pivot to keep moving towards my destination?” The answer would come from either my head or my heart. In the more significant challenges, my spirit needed to answer first.

“Is this blockage telling me that leadership coaching is not for me, or is this blockage to test my resolve? So I would write down what I still enjoyed about what I am doing. If I had nothing to write, it would be time to give up.

Energy Apparent

Was the energy still there? Yes. Was I still enjoying helping leaders? Yes. Over the years, I asked these questions many times. The answers came from deep within me, indicating I was still on the right path. I reviewed what I enjoyed most about what I was doing, which fuelled my resolve to continue.

Head Talk: Realize Your Uniqueness

Now my head came into play. Was this a challenge, a roadblock where I needed to take stock and pivot, or a speed bump that I could persist and ride out?

My first major challenge was that people saw me as a financial services executive, not a leadership coach in Australia. I decided to move to Singapore, where I could more easily build my new personal brand as a leadership coach. The initial roadblock required me to pivot to continue my journey for the better.

It wasn’t perfect sailing, far from it. Establishing myself in a new country and not knowing anyone created numerous challenges to test my resolve. A global financial crisis postponed six months of booked work, and the list continues. But upon reflection, I see all the speed bumps and roadblocks adding to my most significant teachers’ growth. Each one of them taught me something new about myself. At the time, I didn’t see it that way, but now it is evident they were lessons I needed to have.

Lessons: Realize Your Uniqueness for Success to Follow

A. Sincerity

One thing was that the more sincere you are, the more people will want to help you. And the more people helped me, the more resolve it gave me. Being transparent with people and always walking my talk allowed for trusting relationships to develop. Whether I specifically asked for help, I found that people wanted to support me. It was the sincerity of my belief in my purpose that motivated them.

B. Believable

One example of this was having my credit terms extended without me asking because they could see me struggling at the time. They believed in me and wanted me to succeed. The consistency of belief comes from the heart, not from the head. It only comes from first believing in yourself and what you want to achieve.

C. Calm

Stay calm about the pace of your journey. Slow is okay; it’s like eating one peanut at a time. It’s slower, but the taste is still as good. It’s slow for a reason. For me it was to teach me many things about life. I can now use these lessons to help others on their leadership journey. I will admit I thought I knew what was essential, but I now know, in hindsight, I didn’t.

D. Patience

My acceptance of patience to endure my slow progress while ignoring the nay-sayers required continual reflection on my progress, no matter how small it was. These experiences have enabled me to have a better and more positive impact on my clients. Patience is where many people falter on their journey. They give up too early. The key was to give me some regular quiet time and reflect on my journey to date. I would start by asking the questions, “why am I doing this?” and “what do I enjoy about what I am doing? Thinking about these positives kept me going. If I couldn’t see a positive, it would have been time for me to quit. Thankfully, I saw many.

Sometimes these constant early challenges often felt like I was jumping off a cliff and just having faith that there would be a net to catch me at the bottom. My safety catch was to believe something positive would happen, and thankfully it always did.

E. Authenticity

Another essential lesson is to stay true to your inner self, the authentic you. Listen to your heart and live life from there. While business typically plays in our heads, and we can use our minds for tactics, our drive and passion come from our hearts. Realizing the fact enables presenting the real you with the consistent development of your brand.

What defines you comes from within.

In Conclusion: Realize Your Uniqueness for Success to Follow

but to be kept in mind upfront, the one essential ingredient for business success is to have fun. When I look back over those years, it brings a smile. Yes, it’s been an enjoyable ride with lots of fun, and when I look towards the future, it also brings a smile because I know I am now on a better path to enjoy my journey step by step. In short, ‘realize your uniqueness for success to follow!’
